Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum
100 years ago, there were thousands of poorhouses and workhouses all over Europe. In Svendborg is one of the very last ones that has been preserved. In 1872, the Poor House in Svendborg proudly opened the doors to “Svendborg Købstads Arbejds- og Forsørgelsesanstalt”. In common parlance, it was simply called the Poor House. The poorest and most socially excluded citizens were admitted here. They lost their civil rights: the right to vote, property rights, guardianship of their children and the right to marry. It was assessed whether they were worthy or unworthy of need. The worthy had to live in the Welfare Institution. The unworthy had to live in the Work House. The museum is housed in the buildings that belonged to the Poor House. There are three wings with good access to and between the buildings. The museum has been renovated and accessibility is very good. There is access to all floors, level-free access with automatic doors and accessible toilet facilities. In Denmark, it is estimated that there are 150,000 people who have tried to be, or are, placed outside the home. Right now, approximately 13,500 children and young people are placed outside the home. How is the first day experienced? What is it like to be placed? What happens after a placement? These questions are the focus of the award-winning exhibition "ANBRAGT", where children placed across generations and time - from the 19th century to the present day - talk about their placement. "ANBRAGT" is two exhibitions - one for young people/adults and one for children aged 8-12. The exhibition is located on the 1st floor of the Welfare Department. There is a lift to this floor. At the museum entrance there is one parking space reserved for disabled parking. The parking space is located 60 meters from the main entrance. You can bring a companion free of charge by showing a companion card. Read more about access conditions to the various facilities below. We hope you have an exciting day at the museum.
